Evelyn L. Kuehl

1920 - 2005

Evelyn Louise Kuehl, 84, Watertown, fell asleep in Jesus on February 2, 2005.

Funeral services were held Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. James Mattek officiating.

Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Evelyn was born on April 3, 1920, in Watertown, daughter of local businessman Louis and Cora (Kuester) Knick. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1937. She met Paul Kuehl at Northwestern College in Watertown while Paul was a college freshman and she was enrolled in the business course. Upon graduation, Evelyn worked as a legal secretary in Watertown and Milwaukee.

Evelyn and Paul were married on June 16, 1944, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown. Following their marriage they moved to North Dakota to serve parishes in Reeder and Hettinger from 1944 to 1946 and in Mandan from 1946 to 1956. From 1956 to 1961 they served in Cudahy.

In 1961, they returned to Watertown after Paul accepted a call to teach at Northwestern College.  They remained in Watertown following Paul's retirement from the active ministry in 1984. Evelyn never retired from the ministry of making a house a home. She continued with her many interests that included written correspondence with family and friends, genealogy research and a special capacity for making meaningful gifts out of little for her family and friends.

After Paul entered Wisconsin Lutheran Care Center in Milwaukee in March 2002, Evelyn lived with her daughter Beth and her husband Eric Goldschmidt and their family, also in Milwaukee. It was from this special home that she was gathered to life everlasting.

Surviving are eight children, John (Tami) of Phoenix, Ariz., Kathleen (the Rev. Harold) Hagedorn of Wauwatosa, Mary (David) Meer of Rochester, Minn., the Rev. James (Carol) of Hartford, Paul of Whiteriver, Ariz., the Rev. David (Susan) of Muskego, Mark of Watertown, and Elizabeth (the Rev. Eric) Goldschmidt of Milwaukee; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald (Cynthia) of Springstead.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in October 2003, and a son, Timothy, in December 2001.
