Edward Opperud

1938 - 2006

 

Edward C. Opperud, 68, of Watertown, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, in Albano/Rome, Italy, of an apparent heart attack.

 

Ed was born on Jan. 16, 1938, in Milwaukee, the son of Arthur and Isabel (Krueger) Opperud. He was a 1956 graduate of Watertown High School and a graduate of Milwaukee School of Engineering.

 

Ed served in the United States Army in Germany and later married Marianne Haase on July 21, 1962, in Beaver Dam. Ed worked at Brandt Inc. and then DeLaRue Cash Systems from 1979 to 2003. He was hired on Jan. 22, 1979, as manager of manufacturing engineering; plant manager Nov. 1, 1980; director of manufacturing July 1, 1985; director of operations Jan. 1, 1986; general manager Jan. 1, 1988; vice president of manufacturing March 29, 1988; vice president of operations June 1, 1993; executive vice president May 27, 1994; president Sept. 8, 1998, and retired on Jan. 16, 2000.

 

Ed was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church. He was a very committed member of the church and was also past president of the Watertown Rotary Club. He was currently a member of the Watertown Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, Dodge Jefferson Healthier Community Partnership Board, Watertown Promotive Corp. Board and a former member of the Watertown Chamber Board of Directors.

 

In his free time, he loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

 

Survivors include his wife, Marianne Opperud of Watertown; a son, Bruce Opperud of Milwaukee; a daughter, Chris (Allen) Tessmann of Plover; three grandchildren, David, Daniel and Ryan; two sisters, Judy (Roger) Guenther and Nancy (Paul) Lauth, both of Beaver Dam. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Memorials, if desired, may be directed to the charity of one's choice.

 

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Watertown with the Rev. Father Thomas Marr officiating. Burial with military rites will be conducted by the Watertown City Veterans Council in Oak Hill Cemetery, Watertown.
